John qualified from Cambridge in 1985 and worked in mixed practice in Cheshire and Essex before moving to RVC in 1990 to run the farm animal ambulatory clinical. In 1997 he moved to Saudi Arabia as Head Veterinarian to the world’s largest fully integrated dairy company.  He returned to  the RVC in 2003 as Senior Lecturer and was, until recently, Head of the RVC Department of Production and Population Health and Head of the Farm Animal Health and Production Group.  He is a former president of the British Cattle Veterinary association and previously was on the editorial board of the journal In Practice.

John is currently BVA Junior Vice President (2017), and due to be President in 2018

John is a recognised RCVS Specialist in Cattle Health and Production and a European Specialist in Bovine Health Management.
