Educated at the universities of Cambridge, Illinois and Aberdeen. Lectured in Agricultural Chemistry at the Edinburgh School of Agriculture (1959-63). Conducted research in animal nutrition at the Rowett Research Institute, Aberdeen (1963-78). Professor of Animal Production and Health, University of Aberdeen (1978-91). In retirement farmed sheep and Charolais cattle in North Wales (1991-2009). An author of the textbook “Animal Nutrition”. Past President and now Honorary Member of the British Society of Animal Science, and founder member of the Dairy Science Forum.
